Olives in Oregon

The history of olive growing in Oregon is relatively new.  A few pioneer families in Southern Oregon planted a limited number of acres upon their homesteads in the beginning of the 20th century, but none were for vast commercial operations.  Only since the 21st century have Oregonian's started to turn their lands into larger, commercial olive enterprises.  There are a few large groves in Southern Oregon (Roque Valley) and a handful in the Northern Willamette Valley.

arbequina_olives_rev_2.jpgOne of these founding groves is owned and managed by the Durant Family.  They have one of the largest groves in the Willamette Valley comprising of 11,000+ Arbequina, Arbosana and Koroneiki olive trees, spread over 15 acres.  The groves are located in Yamhill County, in an area known as the Dundee Hills.

While there are over 700 varities of olive trees in the world, the three types planted by the Durants are known for their cold-hardiness (to 10 degrees Farenheit) and adaptability to the region's soil and climate conditions.  These trees grow as bushes, and are easier to manage and maintain than their larger counterparts in other parts of the world.

The Durants believe in these trees so much that they have become the Northern Oregon distributor for them.  For more information on the purchase of these trees, contact us directly at 503-864-2200.
