History of Olives, and Olive Oil
Olives
Olives are thought to be originally native to Asia Minor. From there they spread to Iran, Syria, Palestine and to the rest of the Mediterranean area approximately 6,000 years ago. They are among the oldest known cultivated trees in the world - being grown even before written word was invented. The Phoenicians, seafaring Mediterranean people, are believed to have spread olive trees to Africa and Southern Europe.
The olive tree has long been a symbol of abundance, glory and peace, giving its leafy branches to crown the victorious in friendly games and bloody war.
Olive Oil
It has been called "liquid gold" by Homer. Olive oil has been more than mere food to the peoples of the Mediterranean : it has been medicinal, magical, an endless source of fascination and wonder and the fountain of great wealth and power.
Italy and Spain are now the most prolific producers of Olive Oil, although Greece is still very active. New World players include Australia, New Zealand, California, and now, Oregon!
